Dame Vera and Nicole Jacobs have sent a letter sent to the Attorney General, the Home Secretary and the Justice Secretary expressing concerns

Today, The Domestic Abuse Commissioner and I have written to the Attorney General, the Home Secretary and the Justice Secretary expressing our concern that despite increasing volumes of domestic abuse cases being reported to and recorded by the police, the numbers of perpetrators being convicted for their crimes has fallen.

Police recorded domestic abuse incidents increased by 24% in the year to 2018/19 and by 8% in the year to 2019/20. In the same period, referrals from the police to the CPS fell by 18.8%, and the total number of perpetrators prosecuted fell by 22% in just one year.

It is vital that we understand reasons behind this and take action to reverse this drop in prosecutions as a matter of urgency.
