Crime and Policing Bill: Commissioner welcomes strengthened commitment to neighbourhood policing

Published:

The Victims' Commissioner responds to the introduction of Crime and Policing Bill.

Today, Tuesday 25 February, the government introduced the Crime and Policing Bill, a large piece of legislation looking to tackle anti-social behaviour, shop theft and street crime.

Commenting on the introduction of the Bill, the Victims’ Commissioner, Baroness Newlove, said:

It is vital that the police and criminal justice agencies have the powers and resources needed to protect victims and keep communities safe. This Bill marks a step in the right direction, and I welcome the government’s commitment to strengthening neighbourhood policing.

I have always believed that neighbourhood policing is key to reducing crime and making our streets safer. But to be effective, victims must trust that when they report a crime, officers will not only be present but also have the skills, training and capacity to respond decisively and provide the support victims need.”
